If you are looking for cheap things to do in London and you are also an art lover, you need look no further.

There are a number of leading Art Galleries in London that offer free admission to view their permanent collection, Several also offer scheduled guided tours where you can learn detailed information about the artist, the painting and the fascinating history behind both.

Free Exhibitions in London’s National Art Gallery

London’s National Art Gallery located in Trafalgar Square displays as part of its permanent collection some of the world’s most famous artists and paintings including Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ and Constables ‘The Hay Wain.’

The Gallery is open daily from 10.00 to 17.45 and admission in free. The Gallery also holds special exhibitions which charge an entrance fee of £12 ($18) or £6 ($9) for students.

National Portrait Gallery in London

Founded in 1856, the National Portrait Gallery in London has been collecting portraits of the most famous and influential figures of British history for over 150 years.

The collection itself spans over 750 years of history and there are over 1000 works of art on display. The Gallery is open daily from 10.00 to 18.00, but opens until 21.00 Thursday and Friday.

Tate Britain in London

The regal building of Tate Britain on Millbank alongside the Thames houses the Tate collection of British art from 1500 to present day. In order to ensure visitors see different works of art the displays are changed regularly.

Admission to the permanent collection is free of charge as are guided tours. The tours are held weekdays at 11.00, 12.00, 14.00 and 15.00 and weekends at 12.00 and 15.00.

Tate Modern in London

Tate Modern on Queens Walk overlooking the Thames, is home to international modern and contemporary art from the beginning of the 20th century to present day.

Admission to some of the most iconic modern images is free of charge and if you wish to know more detail about some of the pieces on exhibit, free guided tours are available at specified times throughout the day. Tours for Poetry and Dream begin at 11.00, Material Gestures at 12.00 States of Flux at 14.00 and finally Idea and Object meet at 15.00.

Royal Academy of Arts in London

The Royal Academy of Arts in London is home to well known artists and unknown artists alike and is renowned for its obscure and frivolous displays of artwork. If you want to witness art in unusual forms the Royal Academy of Art is the place to go.

Many of the featured events and exhibitions held at the Royal Academy, including the esteemed Summer Exhibition, carry a charge of £9($14.50) £7($11.50) for students though admission to the permanent collection on display in the John Madjeski Fine Rooms is free of charge.
