English Country Cottages on the Dorset Coast

Accommodation near the South-West Coastal Path and Jurassic Coast

Nov 5, 2009 Mike Gerrard

Dorset Coastal Cottages rent self-catering English country cottages providing accommodation on or near the Jurassic Coast and Coastal Path in South-West England.

The Dorset coast is one of the most scenic stretches of coastline in south-west England, and a typical English country cottage one of the best accommodation choices to help enjoy it. The coastline includes part of what is known as the Jurassic Coast, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the South-West Coast (or Coastal) Path, the longest signposted footpath in England.

The South-West Coast Path

Sometimes referred to as the Coastal Path, though its official name is the South-West Coast Path, this runs for 630 miles and is the longest waymarked footpath in England. It stretches around the south-west English counties of Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall and passes through two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Jurassic Coast and the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape.

Although many people take up the challenge of walking the whole length of the path, it is also popular because it is easy to walk short stretches of a few miles at a time, then turn round and walk back to the starting point. The views are different in each direction, the paths are well signposted, and there are plenty of books, maps, and leaflets available giving directions and explaining points of interest along the way.

The Jurassic Coast in Dorset

The Jurassic Coast is a stretch on the southern coast of South-West England that takes in Dorset and East Devon. The South-West Coast Path runs all the way through it, and it gets its name from the many fossils found here, and the dramatic cliffs and other rock formations that date back to the Jurassic period.

English Country Cottages near the Dorset Coast

Dorset Coastal Cottages look after 176 self-catering accommodations that are all within ten miles of the Dorset coast, and in many cases within five miles. They range from tiny historic thatched village cottages that can accommodate just two people to large detached cottages for as many as 17 guests.

Some of the cottages on or near the Dorset coast include:

  • Well Court in Corfe: a large 16th-century cottage, more like a country house, with views of Corfe Castle and accommodation for up to 17 guests.
  • Woodgate Lodge in Studland: less than a mile from the sandy beach at Studland Bay and with views of Studland Heath and Poole Harbour.
  • Wayn Flete Cottage in Loders: near Bridport, this is the archetypal thatched cottage with two bedrooms and views across the Dorset hills, and only four miles from the Dorset coast at West Bay.
