Where to Stay: Exmoor Coast at Lynmouth, Donna Dailey
Exmoor National Park in southwest England straddles Somerset and Devon. Places to stay includes hotels, country cottages, b&bs, farms, and guesthouses.

Exmoor National Park was one of the first National Parks in Britain, and is still one of the most beautiful. Despite the name it is not only moorland, as this area was once a Royal Forest and a popular hunting ground. It stretches out to the coast of both Somerset and Devon, and so the landscape includes beaches and cliffs as well as leafy lanes. If planning a visit. there is a lot of good accommodation to be found, including luxury hotels, guesthouses, b&bs, farm holidays, country cottages, and cheap youth hostels. Here are a few suggestions on where to stay in or near some of Exmoor's most popular places.

Where to Stay for Exmoor: Dulverton

The 16th-century Tarr Farm Inn at Tarr Steps near Dulverton is set deep in 40 acres of its own Exmoor countryside with views to Wales and of Devon and Dartmoor. In addition to its 9 guest bedrooms it also has a highly acclaimed restaurant.

Where to Stay for Exmoor: Dunster

The Royal Oak Inn is in Luxborough, a few miles south of the very popular and pretty Exmoor town of Dunster. It's a real country inn in a quiet wooded valley, ideal for getting away from it all. It has 11 guest bedrooms, including one with a private terrace, as well as a good range of local beers and good local food, including fish, beef, local cheeses and venison.

Where to Stay for Exmoor: Exford

Exford is a tiny place with a few shops, a youth hostel and good accommodation in two inns. The Crown is a 17th-century coaching inn (one of the oldest on Exmoor) with open fires, a beautiful water garden, its own restaurant, and 17 guest bedrooms.

Where to Stay for Exmoor: Lynmouth and Lynton

The connected villages of Lynton and Lynmouth have one of the prettiest and most dramatic settings on the Exmoor coast. The Tors hotel is set in 5 acres of woodland overlooking Lynmouth, and the sea views are stunning.

Where to Stay for Exmoor: Porlock

Recommnded by many hotel guides, including Michelin and the Good Hotel Guide, Oaks Hotel in Porlock is an Edwardian country house hotel on the edge of Porlock, one of Exmoor's most attractive villages.
