Bankfield Museum, HalifaxA museum located in the former home of a Victorian mill owner. Attractions include the Duke of Wellington Regimental Museum, toy and marble galleries and textiles from around the world. Part of the building dates back to medieval times and the house is furnished as it would have been at different times in the house’s history. Bolling Hall is reputed to be haunted by a White Lady ghost. Exhibits include a transport section, a mill owner’s house, mill workers’ terraced houses, spinning and weaving machinery and a team of working horses. Cartwright Hall is located in Lister Park, which has a boating lake and adventure playground. The ruins of the Olicana Roman fort can be found behind the museum, with interpretative boards which help visitors understand the remains. The community was disbanded during the Reformation and the buildings fell into disrepair, heavily damaged by looters. The abbey that remains, however, is substantial and the buildings stands in extensive parkland on the banks of the River Aire.
