London finally has a fantastic showcase for the movies in The Movieum, a celebration of films through the ages, small screen to big screen, genres to animation.

Just by the London Eye, in County Hall on the South Bank of the Thames, is the new Movieum, a hymn to British movies past and present. Elstree, Pinewood, and Sheperton studios encompass the golden age of British film making, and a visit to Movieum offers a revealing insight in the studios where movie history was made.

Walk up the red carpet lined with life-size Oscars and lit by arc-lamps and feel like a star - that is until Sweeney Todd in bloody apron jumps out to offer a shave or a hair-cut!

The new and exciting Movieum offers real life sets, studio history, a guide to film making, the art of prop making, a great animation studio, a stills studio and a brilliant section on From Script to Screen.

Real Life Movie Sets

Real Life Sets lets you step into the action of the sound stage, where you can be part of the movie making experience. You can add your own sound in the sound studio, fly in the clouds or tumble down snow covered mountains in the virtual studio. Take part in your own movie and see what a star you can be.

Movie Props – The Italian Job, Star Wars and Dr. Who

The props also provide ideal photo opportunities along with film miniaturisation, an art that enables you to look like a pgymy in a Land of Giants. You can pose beside the original Mini Car and the gold bullion from The Italian Job or Joely Richardson’s original space suit and Sam Neil’s original chair from “Event Horizon”. Wander into the Horror area and come face to face with the living dead as they ooze out of the walls, recoil from zombies in the darkened room as the Dolby surround music underlines the horror. Check out the original Dalek from the 1966 Dr. Who or have you picture taken on one of the mini sets including those of Star Wars, The Elizabethan Throne or Desert Island.

Sherlock Holmes and Baker Street.

The atypical English figure of Sherlock Holmes isn’t forgotten and his world is reproduced as you discover the legend behind one of the most popular characters in living history. The study set from the popular series is here faithfully re-created with original set pieces, furniture and props, including a penny-farthing bicycle – even the Baker Street sign with wrought-iron railings is here.

Oscar Winning Artist Interviews

Stories behind the blockbusters: Listen to Oscar winning artists tell their tales behind some of the biggest blockbusters of all time as you watch exclusive interviews with some of today’s biggest stars, or sit in the lounge and replay classic TV series that made it to feature film status.

Lessons in Script Writing

From Film Lover to Film Maker– Budding script writers can follow the step by step guide to film making, from the initial script to final edit and check out the learning room’s interactive and fun programmes that allow you to experience 3D modelling and face manipulations.

Animation and Cartoon Characterization

Learn cartoon characterizationm, drawing and comic-book animation, with Movieum’s own Huw-J whose Masterclass is justly popular. The 30-minute Saturday morning classes are walk in at the moment, but it is best to enquire first. Activities for kids include storyboard colouring-in as well as plastercine modelling and building bricks.

This newest attraction on the banks of the Thames, just a few steps away from the Big Eye and right next to the Aquarium and the Dali Museum in County Hall, is helping to keep the South Bank one of London’s best tourist haunts.
