The Dorset town on the Isle of Purbeck has plenty to offer - glistening sands, turquoise sea, stunning scenery and old world charm. Day and night there is something going on for visitors of all ages.

A Traditional English Seaside Resort

It is not long before visitors to Swanage encounter the Punch and Judy show on the promenade. One of the few still operating on the south coast, it is a perennial favourite with children and adults alike.

Other seaside favourites include building sandcastles on the beach. Swanage is blessed with a generous curve of sand stretching around the bay, and there is always plenty of room, even at high tide. The fine, white sand is ideal for creating impressive structures that stand for just one day.

Another popular seaside past time is rock pooling. As the tide withdraws is exposes a fine selection of pools that teem with sea life. Turning over almost any rock sends a myriad of tiny creatures scurrying. Children delight in quickly filling their buckets with crabs, shrimps and small fish.

A Gateway to England's Jurassic Coast

Swanage sits at the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. The area is home to some the England's most impressive natural landmarks including Durdle Door, Old Harry's Rocks, Lulworth Cove, Portland and Chesil Beach.

There is more to the Jurassic Coast than stunning scenery. It represents over 180 million years of our planet's history, demonstrated through an incredible fossil record. A rich haul of fossils have been uncovered over the years and many are now in display in museums, or available to buy from specialist shops. But others are still waiting to be discovered.

Swanage offers a combination of breathtaking scenery, a rich tapestry of history and stunningly visual geology, all in one place.

A Family Holiday Destination

Swanage has something to offer everyone. But it is particularly popular with families because of the wide range of activites it has for visitors of all ages.

In addition to the beach Swanage has facilities for the leisurely pursuits of putting, bowls, and crazy golf. There are rides for younger children and amusement arcades for older ones. There is a rich variety of pubs and restuarants for eating out, and no shortage of fish and chip vendors.

Just a few miles to the north-west of the town stand the dramatic ruins of Corfe Castle, which make for a great day out. Steam engines pull trains on the historic Swanage Railway from the coast to Corfe and beyond. Walkers can enjoy the drama the of Swanage section of the South West Coastal Path.
