2007 in London began with a big bang when 150,000 partying people turned up to watch the fireworks display that was fired from the London Eye. London residents and visitors will see in 2008 the same way, with ten minutes of spectacular fireworks immediately after Big Ben has chimed midnight. If you can't get down to the River Thames then don't worry, as the fireworks can be seen from lots of places with good vantage points, like Hampstead Heath. Even better, everyone around the country can switch on the TV and watch the BBC broadcast the fireworks live.
From 8th November 2007 visitors to London's Natural History Museum won't just be able to look at the museum's usual attractions, there will also be a 1000-metre outdoor ice rink to use too. The museum's ice rink will be open right through to 20th January 2008, and there will also be a special junior ice rink for the younger skaters, with helpers on hand to keep an eye on everyone. There's also a café bar and a viewing platform where the non-skaters can relax. Visitors should book tickets, especially for the early morning and late-night sessions, and of course for the ice skating on New Year's Eve when there will be a special event and the ice rink will be open from 10pm to 12:30am.
The Super Furry Animals headline at London's Royal Festival Hall in the South Bank Centre for what they are promising will be the best New Year's Eve Party Ever. From 8:30pm onwards on New Year's Eve there are going to be bands, DJs, art installations, happenings and stunning visual effects as the Hall is turned into a surrealist playground for one night only.
Also at the South Bank Centre but starting at 9:30pm in the Front Room is the return of the amazing Silent Disco. The Silent Disco has been seen (but not heard) at Glastonbury, the Brighton Comedy festival, the Edinburgh Fringe and before at the South Bank Centre. Dancers are given headphones with a choice of music channels, and can dance the night away – but take the headphones off and everything is quiet, just the sight of happy dancers having fun.
