New Age Bookshops And Stores In Glastonbury, UK

Shopping for Mystical and Wiccan Items in the Isle of Avalon

Sep 21, 2009 Richard Mudhar

Glastonbury is the mystical heart of England and legendary birthplace of King Arthur. This heritage is reflected in lovely range of New Age, Wiccan and Mystical shops.

The town of Glastonbury nestles around the foot of the ancient Isle of Avalon, Glastonbury Tor. The rich heritage includes the legend that Joseph of Arimathea planted his staff in the ground on visiting Britain, from whence the Holy Thorn sprouted - one still stands windswept on Wearyall Hill, visible from the Tor.

There is a strong countercultural community based around the town, and it boasts a remarkable concentration of shops specialising in New Age, Wicca and the Occult, all within a few hundred yards of the Market Cross near the Glastonbury Abbey. There are more than can be done justice here, but some of the most notable ones are:

Bookshops in Glastonbury

Gothic Image carries a good number of new age titles, it is also a publisher of numerous titles on a mystical theme. It is often worth a browse, and has many books of local interest about the mystical traditions of Glastonbury and its surroundings.

Next to Gothic Image, The Speaking Tree bookshop specialises in mystical, new-age, wiccan and self-help titles and carries a good stock of new books at low prices, often special-purchased or end of run.

Courtyard Books on the other side of the road opposite the Speaking Tree carries on the Mind Body and Spirit theme with a great collection of second-hand and antiquarian books, often including some occult classics by Aleister Crowley, A.E. Waite, Dion Fortune and others.

Glastonbury Shops Selling Crystals, Mystical, New Age and Wiccan Items

Glastonbury has more than books to offer. Star Child, located in the little courtyard next to the Blue Note vegetarian café, has a huge selection of incenses, perfumes and candles. Star Child carry a range of ingredients to make up perfumes, essential oils and incenses from scratch, to.

Back on the High Street, the Goddess and the Green Man carry a lovely range of products with a Wiccan and Pagan emphasis. Next door, Art of Africa carries a fascinating stock of items, many hand-made in Africa, including some unusual musical instruments and small drums. The Witchcraft Emporium down the Gauntlet mini-arcade sells all sorts of Wiccan items, including cauldrons scaled down to match modern homes.

It is possible to browse for hours among the huge range and diversity of Glastonbury's new age, mystical and Wiccan shops, the the concentration works well as they have the chance to specialise in depth, rather than all carrying a similar set of products. Many of the items are unique and often hand made craft items.

Eating Out in Glastonbury

As well as a couple of pubs near the Market Cross off Northload Street, there are two fine vegetarian restaurants in Glastonbury. Café Gelatea, between Gothic Image and the Speaking Tree, has an excellent menu and the Blue Note Café on the other side of the road serves an outstanding vegetarian breakfast among the other items on the menu.

Other Glastonbury Sites to Visit in Walking Distance From the Shops

Glastonbury Abbey is only a short walk from the Market Cross. The peaceful garden of Chalice Well in Chilkwell Street hosts a chalybeate spring rising from Glastonbury Tor.
