Coln St Aldwyns is a beautiful English Cotswolds village near Cirencester, Glos, and the New Inn offers quirky luxury accommodation with acclaimed restaurant and bar.

The New Inn probably didn't market itself as a quirky luxury hotel when it was built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Back then in the 16th century the Queen declared that there should be a coaching inn within one day's drive of every major centre of population. Today the beautiful Cotswolds village of Coln St. Aldwyns, where the New Inn stands, is less than two hours drive from the centre of London, and only nine miles from Cirencester, but is still offering hospitality to travelers, with parts of the original 16th-century building still surviving.

Quirky Luxury in Cotswolds Hotel

Guests discover one of the New Inn's touches of quirky luxury when they arrive in their rooms and find a small bottle of organic rhubarb-flavored vodka or other drink awaiting them. The vodka is courtesy of Godminster Farms, part-owners of the hotel and who produce a range of goodies like an organic Bloody Mary mix, an English sparkling wine, and vodka in flavours including blackcurrant, sloe, cucumber, elderflower, horseradish, bullace, and damson as well as rhubarb.

History of the New Inn in the Cotswolds

After it was built in the 16th century the New Inn remained an inn till the mid 19th-century when it is known that a malthouse and garden was on this spot (and there is still a pleasant garden and play area for children). It has existed in its present incarnation since at least 1870, when a Mrs Pearcy Smith was recorded as being the Beer Retailer for the village of Coln St Aldwyns.

Coln St Aldwyns

Coln St Aldwyns is a tiny and idyllic Gloucestershire Cotswolds village close to Cirencester and only a short drive from popular Cotswold spots including Bourton on the Water, Burford, Northleach, Upper and Lower Slaughter, Stow on the Wold and Lechlade, and just two miles from one of the most picturesque Cotswolds villages of them all: Bibury. Coln St Aldwyns is such an attractive village that it was recently voted the 7th most desirable village in the whole of the UK by Country Life magazine.

Luxury Features of the New Inn Hotel in the Cotswolds

The New Inn's 13 guest bedrooms are all individually designed to combine contemporary style and luxury with historic features like wooden beams and mullion windows. The modern additions like power showers and flat-screen TVs don't intrude on the traditional coaching inn feeling, and all the rooms have views too.

The New Inn: Dine in Style in the Cotswolds

Part of the New Inn remains the classic English pub bar, although in summer the house Pimms is as popular as traditional beers like Old Hooky and Timothy Taylors. As well as the bar menu and light snacks, next door the 2-rosette restaurant serves dishes like slow-roasted honey-glazed pork belly with black pudding and a red wine jus, with the list of local suppliers proudly credited.

Special Offers at the New Inn

The New Inn actually offers some of its luxury rooms for free on certain days. From Sunday to Thursday three rooms each night are available for free, to guests who book dinner in the restaurant. At certain times of the year guests booking for two nights get the third night free, and there are often discounted rates if rooms are available at the last minute through cancellations. Check the New Inn website for the latest special deals on rooms.
