The Malmaison chain of boutique hotels adds to its list when the new Malmaison Hotel Reading opens this summer. Malmaison guests in Edinburgh can also enjoy cheap rooms
You know where you are with a Malmaison hotel. You can expect a chic and stylish boutique hotel, with designer rooms, somewhere good to eat, staff that might have stepped out of a glossy magazine, relaxed comfort, fun, a very contemporary look and feel, and toiletries that you are actively encouraged to take home with you.
There are already successful Malmaison hotels in Belfast, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle and Oxford. They're all top tourist cities or places that have been on the up as exciting city break destinations, like Leeds and Newcastle. So where is the newest Malmaison hotel opening? Well... in Reading.

A Malmaison Hotel Reading? Overseas visitors to Britain might never even have heard of Reading, and be unaware that it's a bit of a joke to Brits. It doesn't even merit a mention in the new Lonely Planet Guide to Great Britain, though the Rough Guide to England points out its attractions, which include the annual WOMAD celebration of World Music, Arts and Dance, and of course the Reading Festival, one of the country's biggest summer music festivals, rivalling Glastonbury.
Winston Churchill stayed at the Great Western on several occasions, as have other politicians and celebrities. Its good rail connections put Reading just an hour from London, and Oxford is easy to get to as well. Maybe the Malmaison managers aren't so crazy after all.
Opening on July 30th 2007, the Malmaison Hotel Reading occupies what was the Great Western Hotel, a railway hotel built in 1844 and designed by the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is said to be the oldest surviving railway hotel in the world, and has been transformed into a chic and stylish 72-room hotel. The rooms include 3 suites, and there is also a Café Mal, a wine bar, a brasserie, private dining room and meeting room facilities.

Under the 'discount your age' offer, the basic £129 room rate is discounted by the amount of your age when you make the booking. So if you're 50-years-old, you get a discount of 50%, and 25-year-olds get 25%. So if you're going with a friend or partner, make sure the oldest one makes the booking. Or if you can find yourself a 100-year-old friend, you stay for free.
