There are a lot of places in the Warwickshire such as farms, parks and museums which are easily accessible by car or public transport and many free to enter.

Why Visit Warwickshire?

Warwickshire has a lot to offer in terms of recreation as well as historical interest, major places being Stratford, Warwick and Coventry. All of the following are suitable for family visits.

Public Parks and Farms

St. Nicholas Park in Warwick is often referred to locally as simply Warwick Park. There is a large open space, apparatus for children of all ages, a small fairground within the park and an 18 hole golf course. Entrance to the park itself is free but some attractions are offered at a small charge. There is a cafe on the grounds as well as plenty of space for picnics. The park also offers boat rides during fine weather and is close to St. John's Museum.

Hoar Park Children's Farm is a working farm near Ansley in North Warwickshire between Bedworth and Nuneaton. This place offers a selection of shops and a licensed restaurant. The park covers 143 acres and is free to enter. Children can see and play with the animals for a small charge.

Kingsbury Water Park in Sutton Coldfield offers miles of flat landscape. There are picnic areas, seasonal events, cycle hire, fishing lakes and many more activities besides. There is a charge for some activities but the park is free to enter.

Coombe Abbey Country Park, Coventry, is a 500 acre site of gardens, lakes and woodland. There are family activities on offer, a small play area and plenty of quiet picnic spots.

Museums

St. John's House Museum in Warwick is a Jacobean house displaying Warwickshire's history and housing the museum of The Royal Warwickshire Regiment along with a period 19th Century kitchen and school room and a Discovery Room for the under fives. Admission is free and the Museum is open all year round.

Coventry Transport Museum is home to the largest collection of British Road Transport in the world with over 500 vehicles including cars, cycles and motorcycles. The museum has some permanent and some temporary displays. There is a new Innovation room where children under ten years can build a soft play vehicle and older children can play a futuristic computer game. It is free to enter and has disabled access.

Castles

Warwick Castle is a medieval castle with a lot to offer. Experience history in the 60 acres of ground, jousting, birds of prey and bowmen shows, towers and the dungeon. The castle is open every day except Christmas Day from 10am to 5pm being open until 6pm from April to September. Prices vary depending on the time.

Kenilworth Castle between Coventry and Warwick is a ruin of an Elizabethan castle. It is open from 10am most days of the year, closing times vary. The castle offers a trail to Old Kenilworth, tea rooms, audio tour, Tudor garden and interactive model.

Other Warwickshire Attractions

Stratford Butterfly Farm houses hundred of beautiful exotic and native butterflies as well as other insects and arachnids. The farm is the largest of it's kind in the UK and is open all summer from 10am to 6pm.

Ragley Hall, Alcester. This family home of the Marquess and Marchioness of Hertford is set in 27 acres of gardens. Opending times vary throughout the year. The gardens include a 3D maze, adventure playground, picnic area and stables.

The Parsonage Project, Bedworth, is set inside the cellar of the Almshouses. There are changing exhibitions focusing on the cultural, agricultural and industrial history of the area. The exhibition is free but there is no disabled access. It is open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

This is just a small selection of sights on offer in Warwickshire. There are tour buses during the summer around Stratford and Coventry. There are other farms, parks, galleries and museums including the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry which has recently been refurbished.
