With vast stretches of sandy beaches, hidden coves and family-friendly resorts, North Yorkshire offers great opportunities for fun.

Whether you are looking for a day out or a break away, the North Yorkshire coastline offers something for all the family. Safe bathing, sand-castles, holiday fun or something a little more tranquil – there really is a stretch of this beautiful coast that is perfect for you.

Traditional Resorts in North Yorkshire

Scarborough, Filey and Whitby are renowned for offering traditional seaside fun for all the family. Scarborough boasts the South and the North Shore, with the former being the more lively option for families. There are the usual arcades, fish & chip shops and donkey rides, which will appeal to all generations. If the weather turns nasty, Scarborough itself offers the Sea Life centre and a host of shops. Meanwhile for quaint seaside charm, Whitby is hard to beat. As well as a picturesque harbour and golden sands, Whitby offers a host of curio shops and a fabulous historic abbey set upon the cliff-top. Filey, meanwhile, provides a quieter pace, with long stretches of beautiful sands and a fabulous promenade.

Picture Postcard Coastline of North Yorkshire

Staithes is one of the most famous villages on the North Yorkshire coasts. A favourite spot for numerous landscape photographers, with some truly stunning scenery, set against the backdrop of the North Yorkshire Moors. Along the coast, Robin Hood’s Bay, lives up to the promise of its enticing name. A row of higgledy-piggledy cottages, housing a variety of quaint tea-rooms and curiosity shops, lines the steep pathway down to the rocky beach. There are fantastic rock-pools to explore and some great walking opportunities. Runswick Bay is also fabulously steep to reach, but well worth the climb back up afterwards. With a sheltered beach, beautiful sand and safe paddling, it is perfect for young children. For fossil hunters, the area to the south of the bay provides great potential.

Piers, Cliff Lifts and Promenades of North Yorkshire

Saltburn-by-the-Sea houses Britain’s most northerly surviving pier. Recently restored, the pier offers traditional arcade entertainment and some good opportunities for fishing. Saltburn also houses Britain’s oldest water-balanced cliff tramway built in 1884, offering to carry passengers from the beach at the foot of the cliff back to the resort itself for a nominal fee – well worth it! A former smugglers haven, the Ship Inn sits alongside the beach, adjacent to the Smugglers Heritage Centre. The promenade, meanwhile, houses Saltburn’s surf centre and you can watch the feats of the surfers battling the North Sea from a variety of cafes. Across from the beach, Saltburn’s Valley Gardens and Woodlands offer good walking opportunities as well as a miniature railway to entertain the little ones.

Further up the coast, Redcar provides a most impressive promenade as well as safe bathing and clean beaches. The setting for the film Atonement, Redcar has witnessed something of a rejuvenation in recent years. As well as the promenade and beach, Redcar offers high street shopping and excellent fish and chip shops!

From the quaint and quiet to the fun and fabulous, North Yorkshire’s coast offers something for everyone.
