Between 1577 and 1580, Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the world. See a full scale replica of the Elizabethan Galleon he sailed in.

Sir Francis Drake was a politician, Mayor of Plymouth, Vice Admiral, slaver and privateer, though he is best known for his part in the defeat of the Spanish Armada and his feat as a navigator and adventurer.

Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano

The world's first circumnavigation was between 1519 and 1522, and widely credited to the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan who set sail from the Mediterranean on a voyage sponsored by King Charles I of Spain. However, Magellan’s expedition ended when he was killed in a battle with Indonesian natives in the Philippine Islands. The voyage was completed by his charge Juan Sebastian Elcano.

First Englishman To Successfully Sail Round The World

It was 58 years later when Sir Francis Drake repeated the feat and though he is credited as being the first Englishman to sail the world, could also be deemed to be the first Commanding Officer of a fleet to successfully complete the epic voyage. On his return he was was knighted by Queen Elizabeth aboard the Golden Hinde.

HMS Pelican and The Golden Hinde

The flagship Drake set sail in from Plymouth was originally called the Pelican, but he rechristened the vessel The Golden Hinde in honour of Sir Christopher Hatton, Lord Chancellor of England and one of the principal financers of his voyage. The alleged lover of Queen Elizabeth I, Hatton’s coat of arms was a Golden Hind.

The Golden Hinde Hits Rocky Ground

The voyage almost met an abrupt demise when the ship became anchored for three days on a reef in the South West Pacific near modern day Indonesia. Drake and his crew had to hold tight until the tide lifted and pushed them back into the water.

The Golden Hinde Museum on London’s South Bank

Today, an authentic replica of the 18 gun Galleon is moored at St. Mary Overie Docks on London’s South Bank. Built in 1973 the ship has also successfully circumnavigated the globe and has sailed more than 10,000 miles. Skilled interpreters in full Tudor regalia bring the ships history to life with a series of fun and educational events. With music, games, fancy dress and even a 16 ½ hour sleep over the Golden Hinde can be enjoyed by all the family.
