For a truly unique experience, step back in time at The Hatfield Banquet, which takes place in the fifteenth-century Great Hall of Hatfield House's Old Palace.

Located about forty-five minutes from the center of London in the rural county of Hertfordshire, Hatfield House is a grand Jacobean mansion surrounded by lush gardens and sprawling parkland. The current house was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury and Chief Minister to King James I, but the Royal Palace of Hatfield, which still stands in the West Garden, dates back to 1485 and was once the childhood home of Elizabeth I.

The Old Palace is the setting of a grand Elizabethan-style banquet. Both tourists and locals alike will enjoy an evening of food, fanfare, and fun.

Fine Food in a Grand Atmosphere

Start your evening in the bar, where you can enjoy an aperitif by the log fire. Then, make your way into the magnificent fifteenth-century Great Hall, where dinner is served. As you admire the ornately-carved wooden beams that decorate the vaulted ceiling, which is studded with massive, wrought iron chandeliers, you might feel as if you've stepped into a scene from Harry Potter.

The menu consists of four delectable courses of traditional English fare made with fresh ingredients sourced from local producers. Each course is delivered to the table by “serving wenches.” Guests may also choose between a half bottle of wine or a carafe of mead to enjoy with their meal. Shouts of “Wassail!” can be heard throughout the evening as the medieval spirit spreads throughout the hall.

Authentic Entertainment

In addition to an evening of gastronomic delights, guests are also treated to a program of authentic Elizabethan entertainment, including music and song, dance, and theater. Both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, along with their courtiers, make appearances. Court jesters amuse the audience with their juggling skills, and a fire-eater holds the crowd spell-bound with his pyrotechnical abilities. Audience participation is common, as guests celebrating birthdays or other special events are often invited to take part in some Elizabethan-style fun and games. For those wishing to continue the party after the meal, you can dance the night away at the disco.

The Hatfield Banquet is a popular choice for office parties and other group events, but the relaxed, friendly atmosphere also makes it an ideal date for couples. Many guests get into full character by dressing in period costumes, but for those who aren't so brave, smart casual dress is acceptable. The banquet takes place most Friday nights during the year, with special events held on other evenings. The Christmas season is a popular time to attend the banquet as it features a special menu and program of entertainment. Ticket prices range from £45-50 per person.
