Travelers to the West Country looking for self catering holiday cottages will find pet friendly White Horse Farm an ideal base for visiting Dorset tourist attractions.

Wondering where to stay in Dorset? If hotel accommodations are too confining and bed and breakfast inns too inflexible, perhaps self catering is the answer. Visitors to the West County looking for the comforts of home and the charm of English country cottages will find White Horse Farm the ideal lodging solution.

Located in the tiny village of Middlemarsh about 6 miles south of the market town of Sherborne and about 10 miles north of the county town of Dorchester on the A352, White Horse Farm is owned and operated by Stuart and Audrey Winterbottom. Once a working farm, the farmhouse and barn have been renovated and repurposed as comfortable holiday cottages.

On arrival, all guests of White Horse Farm are welcomed with a delicious homemade cake, baked by Audrey, and tea, coffee, sugar, milk and free range eggs are provided. Guests are advised to bring their provisions with them as the closest shops are in Sherborne.

Self Catering English Country Cottages

Four self catering barn conversion cottages, a 4 star converted farmhouse annex and a new (2009) luxury three-bedroom Wessex built lodge cabin are available for weekly rental or for short breaks of less than a week. Two acres of gardens, a duck pond, and a former paddock provide onsite walking paths from which to view the peaceful, surrounding countryside.

All cottages have fully equipped kitchens, color television sets and video player/recorder, irons and ironing boards, hairdryers, and wireless broadband access. All linens are supplied and prices include heat and electricity. An onsite laundry room is equipped with coin operated washer and dryer and an onsite recreation room offers games, books and video tapes for guests’ use.

Holiday Cottages for Long or Short Breaks

The cottage names come straight out of Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows. The farmhouse is named “The Willows,” and the lodge cabin is called “Otter’s Holt.” The four barn conversion cottages are called “Ratty’s,” “Badger’s,” “Moley’s,” and “Toad Hall.” All of these are one bedroom cottages except “Toad Hall” which has two bedrooms.

“Willows” offers three en-suite bedrooms and sleeps up to six people. It also has its own private fenced garden, great for families with small children, and a washing machine and a dishwasher in the kitchen. “Otter’s Holt” has three bedrooms (one en-suite) with a large open gathering area and large kitchen and sleeps up to eight people. The entire farm can be booked for groups or family reunions and can accommodate up to 28 people.

White Horse Farm is Pet Friendly

Bringing Fluffy or Fido to White Horse Farm is as easy as packing them into the car. All holiday cottages are pet friendly for well behaved animals. There is no extra charge for up to two dogs. Other pets are welcome by prior arrangement. Guests are asked to not leave pets alone in cottages and pets may not sleep on beds unless guests bring and use their own linens.

A large fenced paddock is available for dog walking and guests are asked to clean up after their pets. There are also dog walking paths nearby and White Horse Farm has a number of walking books available that detail country walks in the area. Many local pubs, such as the Hunters Moon, are also pet friendly.

Tourist Attractions in Dorset

The nearby towns of Sherborne and Dorchester offer a variety of historical and tourist attractions. Museums, historic homes, castles, churches and abbeys, shopping and gardens are all within easy reach of White Horse Farm. In addition, the coastal towns of Lyme Regis, Bridport and Weymouth are only a short drive.

A few top attractions not to be missed include Sherborne Abbey, the Sherborne castles, the Cerne Abbas Giant, Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, the Tutankhamen Exhibition, the Terracotta Warriors Museum, and the Dinosaur Museum. Of course there’s also the stunning countryside that Thomas Hardy so eloquently brought to life in his novels.

All in all, White Horse Farm is the ideal holiday cottage location for a visit to the West Country. For more information about White Horse Farm, or to book a stay, contact White Horse Farm, Middlemarsh, Nr. Sherborne, Dorset, DT9 5QN or call in England 01963 210222.
