Winter in Southsea, United KingdomA Township on the South Coast of England
Southsea hugs the coastline in the south coast of England. A sought after family destination during the summer months, it also has a lot to offer in the winter as well.
Southsea is protected by the Isle of Wight in the south and hills in the north, its basin shape creates a shelter from the very harsh cold of the winter and temperatures rarely go below zero degrees Celsius. It is one of the warmer spots in England during the winter. Southsea Pebble BeachAlthough Southsea cannot boast white sandy beaches and palm trees swaying, the pebble beach creates its own charm and beauty. Skipping the pebbles into the sea and watching them skim the surface, or just watching the waves rolling in and out will relax any pent up system, no matter what the temperature is. Rugged up in warm outdoor clothing, you can walk along the promenade with the dog walkers and joggers who don’t allow the brisk bite of the winter chilled air to keep them indoors. Refreshments Along the PromenadeYou can take the the chill off your walk with a nice warm coffee in one of the seafront cafes. While you sit there contemplating you will see the large car -ferry boats leaving the port. They hug the coast before they jpurney out to sea, and you can practically see the pasengers on board as they are that close to the shore. Rocksbys is close to the Southsea pier and is popular with senior groups. It has a post-war charm and serves typical English meals. Further along the promenade towards Clarence pier is Mozzarella Joe’s with its modern contemporary style and delicious pizzas, its a great place to while a way the time and watch the brilliant transformation of colours in the sky as the early afternoon sun sets itself down beyond the horizon. Canoe LakeThe swans never fail to return to the Canoe Lake in the late autumn and take up their residency for the winter.. Often on a Sunday men gather in the park and bring out their remote control power boats and ships and have a play on the water. A popular activity for children is catching crabs in the lake. The kiosk in the park sells all the paraphernalia needed as well as refreshments. And if that doesn’t amuse them then a play in the huge playground will offer some fun, or a visit to the local Southsea natural museum that houses a butterfly farm as well as prehistoric creatures. The Southsea CommonSouthsea Common stretches along the sea front, with its uniform garden beds and wooden benches it’s a common meeting ground where you can meet up with friends and hang about or take a walk to the local precinct and have a wonder around the shops. It makes a great place for a read of the local paper when the sun is shining. Travel to the Isle of WightThe hovercraft departs from Clarence Pier to Ryde on the Isle of Wight. It is only a quick ten minute trip and there are special offers for day trips as long as you are willing to travel within specific times. For a longer trip take the ferry from the ferry port which also takes cars. The Isle of Wight is a popular destination for tourists and B&B’s are plentiful on the island. Well Worth a Visit for Australian TouristsAlthough Southsea is a small geographic area, it is a maze of streets, and included as part of Portsmouth, has the second highest density of population next to London in England. It is well worth the visit, and especially interesting for the Australian visitor for this is the place where the convicts were shipped off more than two hundred years ago to become the first white settlers in the land down under.
